Botany Bay Plantation WMA is on Edisto Island south of Charleston. Part of its 3,363 acres is the rugged "boneyard" beach where enormous whelk shells wash ashore to become part of impromptu visitor-created art (one must not remove the shells). A half-mile walk across a causeway to the beach leads to one of the most spectacular and rugged Atlantic beaches I have seen. Here, I hiked past the boneyard beach southwards as storm clouds collected in the early morning sky; I was alone on the beach and turned my eye towards the coastal scrub that drew the eye down the line in this composition.
