A gorgeous spring morning led me to drive from Gainesville to the Big Bend--a long but very rewarding day trip. I'd never seen the Econfina River before, but it captivated me at first sight and it caused me to leave my car and to hike along its banks. The best pictures beg for adventure and exploration, and here was a marvelous example. The light falling through the green vegetation hit this palm and lit up the variegated tones of green in rush of color. I waded into the river that had come up over its natural bank to take this picture of the palm in its twisting, arching glory, its fronds bursting with sunlight and the river below black and tea-like with tannins.
